Will we ever know what really causes acne? We're often told the same things over and over - oil production, clogged pores, bacteria, inflammation, hormones, etc. Dan, at Acne.org, sums it up as follows:

The more you read about the potential cause of skin cell overproduction and clogged pore formation, the more complex it becomes. We have the hormone system to look at, sebum overproduction, the skin’s inflammatory response, systemic vitamin and mineral deficiency, bacteria over-proliferation, or a combination thereof…the possibilites are endless and the list goes on and on.

In his article, What the heck causes acne?, Dan gives an overview of the main causes. It's not comprehensive, but it's helpful if you're at all interested in the small amount of research behind the scenes of the acne medical field.

In my latest article on Makeup for Acne, I quoted Angela Palmer at About.com who referred to a survey that Neutrogena did. Apparently, women want their makeup to give them the look of flawless skin. Really? Well, that's surprising (not the strong hint of sarcasm).

While there are lots of ways to liven up your makeup with eyeshadows, blushes and mascara, it's getting the perfect concealer and foundation that is the ultimate challenge. Keep on trying and testing. No one has flawless skin, but you can make it look better with the right tools.

Acne can be a problem at any age and sometimes it's easy to let your skin care routine lapse a little when you get to college. There are so many other things going on and sharing a dorm and bathroom with other people may also make you more self-conscious about your routine. Angela Palmer at About.com recommends the following:

Don't forget to take your acne medications with you as you head off to school, and make sure you have a plan to continue getting your prescriptions while your away from home. If stress does a number on your skin, take some time for stress-relieving activities.

Use toothpaste as acne treatment?

I can't believe that the myth about using toothpaste as a spot treatment for pimples is still being promoted.
I just read this recommendation in an article on Ezine Articles:

The best way to treat your acne with toothpaste is to only use it on your spots. It does not replace a acne cleanser.
Dab toothpaste on inflamed area before bed
Cover with band aid
Uncover in morning

It sounds so crazy but it works.

Do NOT do this! Toothpaste has irritants in it that can aggravate an already inflamed pimple and make it much worse. Stick with gently cleansing the area and applying a little acne treatment containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. I prefer something with an antibiotic in it as well, like Duac.

Are you misusing your acne spot treatment?

According to Angela Palmer from About.com, spot treatments are often used incorrectly. What do we mean by 'spot treatment'?

We've all had that particularly annoying pimple that we wish we could quickly zap away. Spot treatments are over-the-counter acne products that help you do just that.
Spot treatments differ from other acne treatments because they are meant to be used only on existing blemishes.

While these spot treatments often contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, if you think that your spot treatment will heal your acne, think again. They may help the odd pimple and keep it from developing if you get to it right away. However, they are not a solution for general acne. For that, you need a stronger treatment that is meant for the whole face, such as a prescription medicine that you can get from your dermatologist.

A bit of surprising news from Dan at Acne.org. Apparently, Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash and Clean & Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin and one and the same.

I've been using the Purpose cleanser for a long time, so this came as a surprise. Since the Clean & Clear can cost less, I'm going to try buying that in the future and see how it feels. They are both sold by Johnson and Johnson.

The makeup industry has shown an increasing awareness of the benefits of going green, just as it has about animal cruelty and organic products.

Evidently, there are standards that can be followed:

I’m happy to report that the United States EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) lists Principles of Green Chemistry on their web site for the entire industry to aspire to. These principles were first published in the book Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice, in 1998.

can chocolate cause acne??

I can only speak from my own experience, but I've never found chocolate to cause acne breakouts. I am a complete chocoholic and eat a piece of chocolate pretty much every day. I've never seen any connection between breakouts and chocolate.

On the other hand, I do find that I break out if my overall diet has been unhealthy for a few days. Fatigue, stress, unhealthy eating, and lack of exercise all contribute to acne. When your immune system is being challenged, your body has trouble defending itself against all types of bacteria and viruses, including the factors that cause acne. So, in these cases chocolate could be a contributing factor to acne if people are replacing healthy food for chocolate or are eating the chocolate as a way of coping with stress.

As I said, these are my personal thoughts and experience, but they do reflect some of the common research that has been done.

I just learned some new tips for concealing acne that I am sure everyone
with cane will appreciate. Bobbi Brown, one of the most respected makeup
artists, says that you should dab concealer on individual pimples and then
just blend around the edges. Use a loose powder to set it and you are ready
to put on foundation. Remember: dab it, don't rub it!
