Severe Acne Itself, Not Accutane, May Increase Risk of Suicide

An article at About.com recently quoted some research on the link between severe acne and suicide. It is interesting to note that, while Accutane may be a contributing factor in some suicides, severe acne in its own can be a contributing factor. The key is to take action to get your acne under control. http://acne.about.com/b/2010/11/16/severe-acne-itself-not-accutane-may-increa...

Stay positive. It is absolutely possible to get clearer skin.

Causes of Acne

Will we ever know what really causes acne?  We're often told the same things over and over - oil production, clogged pores, bacteria, inflammation, hormones, etc. Dan, at Acne.org, sums it up as follows:

The more you read about the potential cause of skin cell overproduction and clogged pore formation, the more complex it becomes. We have the hormone system to look at, sebum overproduction, the skin’s inflammatory response, systemic vitamin and mineral deficiency, bacteria over-proliferation, or a combination thereof…the possibilites are endless and the list goes on and on.

In his article, What the heck causes acne?, Dan gives an overview of the main causes. It's not comprehensive, but it's helpful if you're at all interested in the small amount of research behind the scenes of the acne medical field.

We are in love with the Mia Clarisonic Skincare Brush in our house.  Both my son and daughter have started using it and their pores seem to get cleaner each time.

Read my Clarisonic Review on Makeup For Acne and think about investing in this product if you have acne prone skin.  You can even get more than one brush so that multiple people in the house can use it.

Flawless Skin or Flawless Photo?

Want to master the art of looking flawless in your photos?  Think you just aren't photogenic? Don't want to get your picture taken because you are so broken out?  Well, that's the beauty of learning to edit your photos. For school photos, they even give you the option of having your photos touched up (for a price, of course). However, you don't have to master any expensive software to do it yourself.  I learned to perform some basic touch ups for free.  Read about it in my latest post on How to achieve flawless skin - in a click.

Next step?  Learning to use the big guns with Photo Shop.  I just have to find the time somehow!

Do certain foods cause acne?

Since you got your first pimple you have probably heard people tell you that you should avoid french fries or stay away from your favorite m&ms.  Will they really cause acne?  In my recent article, Do Certain Foods Cause Acne, I talk about whether there is a link or not.  The upshot is that there is a link, and there isn't.  It varies from person to person.  The best news?  Chocolate does not cause acne!  Hallelujah!!

The Dream of Flawless Skin

In my latest article on Makeup for Acne, I quoted Angela Palmer at About.com who referred to a survey that Neutrogena did.  Apparently, women want their makeup to give them the look of flawless skin.  Really?  Well, that's surprising (not the strong hint of sarcasm).

While there are lots of ways to liven up your makeup with eyeshadows, blushes and mascara, it's getting the perfect concealer and foundation that is the ultimate challenge.  Keep on trying and testing.  No one has flawless skin, but you can make it look better with the right tools.

Will Mineral Makeup Clear Acne?

I love mineral makeup and am about to try out everyday minerals, though I still love Bare Minerals matte foundation. But I would never, ever claim that it clears up acne. Not by a long shot. - Sharyn Makeup for Acne

Will Mineral Makeup Clear Acne?

It's no secret I love mineral makeup. I like that it's a more natural skin care choice, and that it doesn't irritate my tends-to-be-sensitive skin.

Apparently, I'm not alone because mineral makeup is hot right now. Nearly every makeup brand has a mineral version, and all come with promises of many skin-healthy benefits.

Acne Skin Care at College

Acne can be a problem at any age and sometimes it's easy to let your skin care routine lapse a little when you get to college.  There are so many other things going on and sharing a dorm and bathroom with other people may also make you more self-conscious about your routine.  Angela Palmer at About.com recommends the following:

Don't forget to take your acne medications with you as you head off to school, and make sure you have a plan to continue getting your prescriptions while your away from home. If stress does a number on your skin, take some time for stress-relieving activities.

Enjoy your time at college and the freedom it comes with!

Use toothpaste as acne treatment?

I can't believe that the myth about using toothpaste as a spot treatment for pimples is still being promoted.
I just read this recommendation in an article on Ezine Articles:

The best way to treat your acne with toothpaste is to only use it on your spots. It does not replace a acne cleanser.

  • Dab toothpaste on inflamed area before bed
  • Cover with band aid
  • Uncover in morning

It sounds so crazy but it works.

Do NOT do this!  Toothpaste has irritants in it that can aggravate an already inflamed pimple and make it much worse.  Stick with gently cleansing the area and applying a little acne treatment containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.  I prefer something with an antibiotic in it as well, like Duac.

Are you misusing your acne spot treatment?

According to Angela Palmer from About.com, spot treatments are often used incorrectly.  What do we mean by 'spot treatment'?

We've all had that particularly annoying pimple that we wish we could quickly zap away. Spot treatments are over-the-counter acne products that help you do just that.

Spot treatments differ from other acne treatments because they are meant to be used only on existing blemishes.

While these spot treatments often contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, if you think that your spot treatment will heal your acne, think again.  They may help the odd pimple and keep it from developing if you get to it right away.  However, they are not a solution for general acne.  For that, you need a stronger treatment that is meant for the whole face, such as a prescription medicine that you can get from your dermatologist.

Is Acne Makeup Going Green?

The makeup industry has shown an increasing awareness of the benefits of going green, just as it has about animal cruelty and organic products.
Evidently, there are standards that can be followed:

The ultimate goal for the future of humanity, as we all know, is to become sustainable. The cosmetics industry is no exception. I’m happy to report that the United States EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) lists Principles of Green Chemistry on their web site for the entire industry to aspire to. These principles were first published in the book Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice, in 1998.

The quote is from Dan's blog at Acne.org, who are trying to go green themselves, though they admit that they haven't gotten there just yet.

Justin Bieber and Proactiv - Another celebrity endorsement!!

I just read in Acne.About.com that Justin Bieber is the new face of Proactiv.  They are even giving away a free Justin Bieber poster with the Proactiv Plus for Teens.

Here's what Angela Palmer has to say:

I'll give Proactiv credit, they've done a great job getting big celebrities to endorse their product, and this may be why Proactiv is so popular. But Proactiv isn't the only 3-step acne treatment option available.

If you stop by your local drugstore you'll find there are many complete acne skin care systems on the market. These won't come with a free Justin Bieber poster, though, (which is either a good thing or bad, depending on your point of view.)

I know that my daughter would stay away from this at all costs, but then she's almost 16, not 11.

At the risk of offending all those older teens who don't like Justin Bieber, here's his video.

I know that my daughter would stay away from this at all costs, but then she's almost 16, not 11.

can chocolate cause acne??

Posted in Acne
Subject: can chocolate cause acne??

Click here to view this posting and others in Acne.

I can only speak from my own experience, but I've never found chocolate to cause acne breakouts.  I am a complete chocoholic and eat a piece of chocolate pretty much every day.  I've never seen any connection between breakouts and chocolate.

On the other hand, I do find that I break out if my overall diet has been unhealthy for a few days.  Fatigue, stress, unhealthy eating, and lack of exercise all contribute to acne.  When your immune system is being challenged, your body has trouble defending itself against all types of bacteria and viruses, including the factors that cause acne.  So, in these cases chocolate could be a contributing factor to acne if people are replacing healthy food for chocolate or are eating the chocolate as a way of coping with stress.

As I said, these are my personal thoughts and experience, but they do reflect some of the common research that has been done.

Tween Acne and Irritated Skin

Your tween is starting to develop blackheads and mild pimples, so you head out to the drug store and buy him an acne cleanser. And he is actually using it!

Everything is going great until your tween starts to complain about dry skin. That's when you notice the redness and irritation.

Tween skin is still young and sensitive, so many of the acne cleansers available can irritate their skin. What's a parent to do?

If OTC acne products are drying out your tween's skin, try this:

  • Try a salicylic acid cleanser, rather than benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid can be less drying to tween skin than benzoyl peroxide.
  • Have your tween use an acne cleanser only at night, and a non-medicated cleanser in the morning.
  • Don't forget the moisturizer! The moisturizer you use isn't the best choice for your tween. Instead, get him a non-medicated, oil-free and noncomedogenic brand. Hypo-allergenic and fragrance free is a plus. (I personally love Purpose, but shop around to find one that suits your tween. She's more likely to use it if she likes it.)
  • If your tween's skin is excessively irritated, stop using the product. Give your doctor a call if the reaction seems severe, or your child's skin isn't improving even after discontinuing use.

More About Tween Acne:

Having a couple 'tweens' who are almost teens, I know all about this. Great tips to read.

Makeup for Acne: Does it hurt or help?

Having battled acne all my life, I am always on the lookout for makeup for acne that will help conceal my blemishes without making them worse.  I have tried everything from specific acne makeup to a whole variety of budget and luxury brands.  As a result, I have a good knowledge of what works and what does not.

One of the first questions acne sufferers ask is whether they can wear makeup at all.  Dermatologists usually recommend to their patients that they refrain from using any makeup.  Others tell them to only use hypoallergenic brands, like Almay or Clinique.  In fact, you can use makeup if you are careful about the ingredients in the product and how you use them.

In order to help you choose what makeup to buy, here are a few tips on what will make your acne worse and what ingredients might even help your acne.

Avoid these types of products:
  • Heavy, greasy lotions or creams.  No petroleum jelly!
  • Anything with lanolin derivatives.  Look for words with lanolin in the name.
  • Products with isopropyl myristate, a deceptive-sounding pore-clogger
  • Shiny, glittery makeup.  The glitter can get stuck in your pores.
  • Makeup with strong fragrances
If you are not already using a topical acne medication, look for these ingredients:
  • Benzoyl peroxide.  This kills bacteria and dries out blemishes.
  • Salicylic acid.  This ingredient exfoliates dead skin cells to help heal blemishes.
  • Tea Tree oil.  A natural ingredient, this kills some bacteria.
Some products contain ingredients that are soothing to inflamed skin with acne or antioxidants to protect the skin from the environment, like Vitamin E, aloe vera, and green tea extract.  If you do not have an allergy to these ingredients then you should consider them an added bonus.

Learn to read labels on any makeup you buy so that you can avoid ingredients that clog your pores.  I have listed out a number of acne makeup ingredients to avoid that were ranked by the Acne Research Institute on my Makeup for Acne website.

In addition, I regularly review popular and new makeup products that are supposed to be good for acne prone skin.  You can read these on my Makeup for Acne website also to find some product recommendations.

Good luck and don't worry about concealing your acne.  Go right ahead!
